3 Things You Need to Know Before Hiking Maroon Bells and Crested Butte

What’s the Best Time to Visit?

The first thing you should consider before planning a hiking trip to Maroon Bells and Crested Butte is the weather. Indeed, you don’t want to visit when the trails are covered in snow or when the wind is blowing hard! Although Aspen is a stunning destination year-round, summer and fall are the best times to come for hiking. You’ll get sunny skies and gorgeous, blooming nature! Temperatures range between 41 and 80 degrees from May through September.

How Do You Get There?

If you live around Colorado, we highly recommend you go on a fun road trip to Aspen! There’s nothing like hopping in your car and driving on the scenic Colorado roads through the mountains. Plus, you get to pack all you want since you have more room! If driving to Maroon Bells and Crested Butte isn’t an option for you (aka too long), you can also fly to Aspen! Denver International Airport is the easiest option as it has regular flights from all over the country (and the world). From there, you can find ground transportation that will take you right to Aspen! We highly recommend renting a vehicle so you can move around more easily during your stay.

What Should You Bring?

Now that we’ve figured out when and how to get to Aspen, it’s time to think of what you will need to hike Maroon Bells and Crested Butte. Here is a list to help you get started:

  • Hiking Boots
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A light backpack
  • Snacks
  • Several pairs of high-rise socks
  • Breathable T-shirts
  • Allergy medicine and anti-ivy cream
  • A camera
  • Sunglasses
  • A hat or cap
  • A hiking stick (if needed)
