COMPLIMENTARY ASPEN TRAVEL GUIDE

5 Historic Sites Near Aspen

Ashcroft Ghost Town

As you head up Castle Creek Road from the roundabout at Aspen’s west entrance, you’ll find yourself in Ashcroft Ghost Town. This town dates back to 1880, when it was a booming silver mining community. Today, remains still stand from historical buildings, including a saloon, post office, and hotel. Guides from the Aspen Historical Society are in Ashcroft to answer questions and guide you through the town’s fascinating history.

Independence Ghost Town

Legend has it that in 1879 prospectors discovered the Independence Gold Lode, which led to a city being created, where 300 people resided. Today, this area is known as Independence Ghost Town and is an archaeological preserve featuring interpretive stations that tell the stories of the area’s rich history. If you’re traveling along the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway, you must make a stop in Independence.

Wheeler Opera House

One of the most notable historic sites in Aspen is the Wheeler Opera House. The building was built in the 1890s and was named after the early developer Jerome B. Wheeler. It was the first property in the city listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the upstairs auditorium hosts annual events, including the Aspen Music Festival, Aspen Laugh Festival, Jazz Aspen Snowmass, and more!

Ute Cemetery

If you’d like to visit another location listed on the National Register of Historic Places during your stay in Aspen, make your way to Ute Cemetery. Dating back to the 19th century, this cemetery was known for being a burial ground for traveling prospectors, soldiers lost during the Civil War, and the poorest people in town. Since then, The National Register has restored parts of Ute in honor of those buried there.

Aspen Community Church

The Aspen Community Church was built in 1890 and remains as beautiful as ever. For years, this church has served generations of people in Aspen and has welcomed travelers from all over. In fact, one of the most famous travelers the church hosted was John Denver, who recorded his Christmas album with the Dickens Carolers in the church with its fantastic acoustics.

Columbine of Aspen

Are you searching for one-of-a-kind treasures? You need to visit Columbine of Aspen! For 45 years, this boutique has collected and sold museum-quality fossils, crystals, and meteorites. They intend to provide the “Jewel of Colorado” with the best jewels in the world.

Everything You Need to Know About an Aspen Spring Break

Whether your kids have the week off from school or you’re just looking for a springtime getaway, Aspen is the place to be. Ski towns are wonderful in the spring. The weather is a bit warmer so you don’t have to worry about bundling up as much, and an Aspen spring break is probably your last chance to hit the slopes until the next ski season. You’ll want to make visiting Aspen in the spring a yearly tradition!

Start planning your Aspen spring break when you access our complimentary Travel Guide. Inside, you’ll find a list of our favorite things to see and do in the area!

GET THE TRAVEL GUIDE

4 Tips for the Best Aspen Spring Break

1. Hit the Slopes

Hitting the slopes is a must during your Aspen spring break! There are four mountains to choose from, so there’s plenty of room for all the skiers and snowboarders looking to get their last few runs in before the slopes close for the season. The mountains close mid-April, so it’s truly your last chance!

2. Attend the Last of Ullr Nights

Ullr Nights are fun for the whole family. Every Friday until the end of March, you’re invited to Elk Camp to enjoy all sorts of snowy activities at night. Start by sledding, snowshoe tours, or snow biking before warming up by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate and s’mores. We love Ullr Nights because the attendees always have a great sense of camaraderie!

3. Don’t Miss the Bud Light Spring Jam

The Bud Light Spring Jam celebrates the spring season with music, snow sports, and tons of fun! There are snowsport competitions, free concerts, and more. Another huge part of this event is the Helly Hansen 4 MTN Mission. This is best described as a scavenger hunt across the four mountains. You’ll have to follow clues to earn points along the way!

4. Take Advantage of Our Concierge

One of the many benefits of staying with Aspen Signature Properties is our concierge service. If there’s something you’re dreaming of doing on your Aspen spring break, our concierge will make it happen. Whether you need to secure lift tickets or want to make a special dinner reservation, we will help you plan the vacation of a lifetime.

Should I Vacation in Aspen or Vail?

During your search for the perfect mountain getaway, you may be deciding between Aspen or Vail. Both of these Colorado towns have a lot to offer, but there are a few differences to keep in mind when planning your vacation. Of course, we are partial to Aspen! At Aspen Signature Vacation Rentals, we make sure you have everything you need for the getaway of a lifetime.

Take a look at our complimentary Aspen Travel Guide for a peek into all that Aspen can offer. Once you make your decision, you can use it to plan your stay!

What Is the Difference Between Vail and Aspen?

While Vail and Aspen are generally similar, there are a few differences that set them apart from each other. Both mountain towns have great views, an amazing culinary scene, and lots of things to do, but there are a few things to keep in mind during the planning process.

One Mountain Versus Four Mountains

The main difference between Vail and Aspen is the number of mountains. Vail has one large mountain while Aspen has four smaller mountains.

Vail is unique because of its back bowls, a seven-mile-wide ski slope. If you love untamed skiing, this is a great opportunity. Aspen gives you the choice of four different mountains, and each offers something different. They’re all connected by free shuttles, so getting around is easy. Plus, Snowmass Mountain is home to the Long Shot, the longest run in the state.

Aspen Is Less Crowded During the Winter

Because Vail is so close to Denver, many Denver residents use Vail as their winter respite. Many Denverites travel the two and a half hours to Vail on the weekends, so the slopes are much more crowded. Because there are so many mountains and trails in Aspen, there are rarely any lines to start skiing.

The Town

If you’re looking for a quaint downtown area, Aspen is the way to go. Vail doesn’t exactly have a downtown area, although there are a few boutiques, restaurants, and shops for you to stroll through. Aspen, however, has a bustling city center. The town was constructed in the 1870s, so the history adds to its charm. The opera house is one of the oldest buildings in town, and there are many things to do besides skiing here!
