The Snowmass Hot Air Balloon Festival is more than just a visual feast; it’s a cherished tradition that draws thousands of visitors each year. With its origins rooted in community spirit and a love for ballooning, the festival has evolved into one of the most anticipated events in the region. This year’s festival marks another chapter in its storied history, continuing to offer a unique blend of family-friendly activities, breathtaking balloon displays, and local charm.

What to Expect:

1. Balloon Launches and Glow Events: The heart of the festival lies in the balloon launches. The festival also features “glow” events in the evening, where the balloons light up the night in a mesmerizing display of illuminated fabrics.

2. Family-Friendly Activities: Beyond the ballooning itself, the festival offers a plethora of activities for all ages. There are interactive ballooning demonstrations, face painting, live music, and craft vendors. Kids can enjoy bounce houses, balloon art, and a variety of games designed to keep them entertained while parents relax and soak in the atmosphere.

3. Community and Culture: The festival isn’t just about balloons; it’s also a celebration of Snowmass Village’s community spirit and culture. • Dress in Layers: The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable as temperatures fluctuate throughout the day.
  • Bring a Camera: With so many vibrant balloons and scenic views, you’ll want to capture every moment. Don’t forget to bring a camera or smartphone to document your experience.

Adventure Awaits: The Ultimate Road Trip from Denver to Aspen

While Aspen, Colorado is renowned as the Rockies premier destination for skiing, outdoor adventures, and cultural experiences year round, our remote location nestled deep within the Rocky Mountains poses a logistical challenge for visitors and locals alike! While many visitors opt for the convenience of flying direct through Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, the drive from Denver offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness the breathtaking beauty of Colorado’s landscapes up close – and experience a few hidden Gems along the way!

Check out a few the Aspen Signature Vacation Rental Team’s favorite spots along the way, to turn your drive from mile high city into a an adventure all on its own!

Planning Ahead: Departure Time

Summer (June – August): Summer season is ideal for road tripping, with warm sunny weather, infrequent traffic and high confidence that the mountain passes will be clear of snow. With fantastic hiking spots along the way, you can’t go wrong with a Summer trip.

Fall (September – November): The fall season offers unmatched views of fall foliage, and the benefit of driving through clear roads in the off season. Avoid the crowds and watch the aspen trees transform into a vibrant tapestry of gold and orange hues, as you traverse through epic scenery.

Winter (December – February): Winter driving conditions can be more challenging due to snow, ice, road closures and of course- the traffic! Keep an eye on the i70 corridor for weather and accident related closures, and plan accordingly. Four wheel drive and snow tires help many drivers feel comfortable in the weather.

Spring (March-May): Spring brings the promise of warmer temperatures – and if we’re lucky, some late season skiing! As the snow begins to melt and wildflowers bloom, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife as Deer, Elk and Mountain Goats will start to greet the warmer days.

In general, our advice is to check the CDOT website and twitter page for up to date traffic info- and avoid Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Most resort visitors will try to make the most of a their stay, and heavy traffic departing resorts begins around 4pm!

Hidden Gems on the Road to Aspen

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a history buff or simply seeking a picturesque escape, there are plenty of great spots along the 200 mile journey from Aspen to Denver. A few of our favorite detours are detailed below:

  • Breckenridge Distillery: Take a tour and tasting at Breckinridge Distillery – the worlds highest elevation for Bourbon production! Their award winning Whiskeys and delicious spirits are best enjoyed over a meal in their dining room. Make sure you save room in your suitcase to bring a feel bottles home!
  • Betty Ford Alpine Gardens: Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, the highest botanical garden in North America. Wander through themed gardens showcasing alpine plants from around the world, and enjoy serene views of Gore Creek and the surrounding mountains.

A rare example of a travertine geological foundation, this spot is truly stunning. Reservations to hike Hanging Lake Trail can be made in advance to ensure access via the free shuttle, which departs from Glenwood Springs.
  • Iron Mountain Hot Springs: Start or end your trip to Aspen with a visit to the Glenwood Hot Springs. Nestled in the heart of the Rockies and heated by geothermal forces, the mineral rich waters provide therapeutic benefits for relaxing and rejuvenation. • Mushroom Rock: Just one more stop in the home stretch on CO-82! A short dog friendly trail to Mushroom Rock offers stunning views of the valley, all season long. Due to the lower elevation, this hike has a year round access window, and is a popular spot for hiking, rock climbing and trail running too.

3 Tips for Buying Real Estate Property in Aspen, CO

Without a doubt, Aspen is one of the most desirable places to own a home in the country. Before you make your investment, take a look at our helpful notes.

Is Aspen Colorado a Good Place To Live?

To answer this question simply—yes! Aspen is a one-of-a-kind place to live. Did you know that Aspen is compiled of a collection of neighborhoods? It’s crucial that you pick the best community for you and your family. Whether that includes a specific school system, proximity to slopes, local businesses, etc., that’s up to you.

  • Central Core – Located in the heart of Aspen, makes it an ideal place for both vacationers and families who want to call Aspen home
  • East Aspen – Relaxed environment, picturesque mountain views year-round
  • Mclain Flats – A 10-minute drive from Downtown Aspen, allowing the community both privacy and proximity to city life • Old Snowmass – Live in a serene environment while enjoying an expansive playground just outside your doorstep
  • Smuggler – Located at the base of Smuggler Mountain, a famous mining area in the early 1900s

How Much Does the Average House in Aspen Cost?

Purchasing a home in Aspen is a great investment! When shopping for property, it’s essential to know the median price of homes in Aspen, so you can be sure you’re spending the right amount of money. Through May 2022, the median single family home price in Aspen was $13,750,00. The median sales price in Aspen has increased 44% over the past year. Want more information about our markets?  Click here to view market data reports.

You might be wondering, “Is Aspen a cheap place to live?” or “Is Aspen an expensive place to live?” Well, that all depends on what your household income is and what you consider to be affordable. Before buying, take note of the area’s property taxes and see if it is within your budget:

  • In Aspen, properties are reassessed every odd-numbered year, according to the Pitkin County assessor’s office.
  • Residential property values are based on comparable sales in the two years preceding the assessment.
  • Once the property’s actual value is established, it’s multiplied by the assessment rate to get the assessed value. The assessment rate is 7.15%.
  • The assessed value is then multiplied by the mill levy to get the tax amount.
  • In Aspen, the mill levy, a kind of tax rate, is 4.95 (this includes the general property tax, which goes to fund local services, schools, and infrastructure, as well as the storm water fund to help keep polluted water from reaching local rivers and lakes).

What Are the Types of Homes for Sale in Aspen?

You’ll find properties ranging in size and shape throughout Aspen’s neighborhoods. What’s the perfect property for you? Condos are ideal for smaller families or people staying in the area seasonally. Single family homes grant you far more privacy, space, and investment opportunities. In recent years, there has been increased interest in condos and townhomes, perhaps because they present lower initial costs while still growing your property’s value over time.

Whether you decide to buy a condominium or a free-standing home in Aspen, you can’t go wrong! Weigh the pros and cons and determine the best option for you.
