A trip to Woody Creek Tavern isn’t your average dining experience. The famous restaurant was a long-time hangout of writer Hunter S. Thompson, who lived in Aspen. If you visit in summer, we recommend riding bikes there — the Rio Grande Trail goes directly from Aspen and is all downhill. You can take a shuttle back to town if you don’t feel like biking.

The Tavern, keeps things easygoing and unpretentious. Stop in for hearty eats, a strong pour, and the kind of folks who make every visit unforgettable.

We think the margaritas are the best in the Valley, and you’ll definitely want to try the tamales. This is cash-only, and there’s an ATM in the back.

Though they have an unbeatable cocktail list, this is one of our favorite lunch spots in town. The best crispy chicken sandwiches in the West. In addition to other sandwiches there are salads and sides as well. Just walk on over! They don’t take reservations, but if there is a wait, trust us — it’s worth it!
