*** 2025-2026 Aspen Ski Season Approaches ***

It’s almost that time of year. Snowflakes and wintery conditions are on their way as Aspen ski season fast approaches! For those of you who make annual trips out here for the winter sports, Thanksgiving is more than just a holiday; it’s a sign that ski season has officially arrived! Aspen Ski Season Opening Dates

The mountains owned by Aspen Skiing Company (Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk) will start opening on Thanksgiving, with opening dates scheduled into December. Lift tickets and passes are transferrable across all four mountains. We compiled a calendar of opening dates in Aspen so that you can start planning the ultimate winter getaway with ease!

Aspen Mountain, known as “Ajax” by locals, will open on Thanksgiving Day 2021. The mountain is accessible by the Silver Queen Gondola, which starts in downtown Aspen. Absorb breathtaking views from inside the Sundeck at the top of the gondola or from Bonnie’s Restaurant below the Ajax Express.

What You Need to Know About the Four Mountains in Aspen

Aspen Mountain

Aspen Mountain, also known as Ajax by the locals, is famous for its ski scene. Experience steep glades, bumps, and incredible views. The terrain is pretty complex here, so we always recommend this mountain for intermediate and expert skiers. It’s a great place to be challenged!

After a day out on the slopes, head to one of the many restaurants at the mountain. Bonnie’s is a classic, go-to spot, and Sundeck is perfect for après ski.

Aspen Highlands

If you’re a local, you probably ski at Aspen Highlands. Here, you’ll find plenty of expert terrains, groomed cruisers, and stunning views of the famous Maroon Bells. If you prefer backcountry skiing, the Highland Bowl is for you! Hike about 30 minutes up to the summit for a 2,500-foot descent. It’s the perfect way to get away from it all– there are no lift lines, and barely anyone is on these nature-made slopes!

Buttermilk Mountain

If you’re familiar with the Winter X Games, you have probably heard of Buttermilk Mountain. This mountain is perfect for beginners, families, and those that prefer a more leisurely ski experience. The gently rolling trails are easy enough for those just starting out, and you’ll love knowing you’re skiing exactly where some of the most famous athletes in winter sports have competed. Head to Cliffhouse for lunch to fuel up with some healthy eats before getting back out on the slopes!

Snowmass Mountain

If you want to explore Snowmass, make sure you plan for at least a few days! Snowmass has the most vertical feet in the entire country– there’s no way you can take advantage of all 4,406 vertical feet in just one day. Plus, there are 91 trails and 21 chairlifts! We love Snowmass Mountain because you’ll never run out of things to explore. Sam’s is conveniently located on top of Sam’s Knob on Snowmass, and it’s the perfect place for après ski drinks and bites.

5 of the Best Aspen Biking Trails to Pedal

It’s no secret that Aspen is filled with countless opportunities for outdoor activities. Reach new heights on a hike, get your adrenaline pumping on a whitewater rafting excursion, watch the sunset over the mountains, and more. Embrace our outdoor lifestyle when you embark on the Aspen biking trails! From exciting mountain biking trails to easy paved pathways, here are our favorite places to pedal. Pedal These 5 Best Aspen Biking Trails

1. Rio Grande Trail

The Rio Grande Trail is easily one of the most popular Aspen biking trails. This partly paved pathway winds for 42 miles all the way from downtown Aspen to Glenwood Springs. The trail is relatively flat, so it’s great for novice bikers and families along with those looking to ride long distances. Along the way, you’ll experience beautiful views of the Roaring Fork River, the Rocky Mountains, and beautiful meadows.

2. Hunter Creek

Smuggler Mountain to Hunter Creek, fondly known to the locals as “Smuggs,” is an excellent mountain biking route. Depending on the course you take, your ride can be anywhere from one to five hours of steep, rocky trails. Most of the trails here are considered intermediate, but keep in mind that there will be some challenges along the way, like the rigorous climb up a Jeep road that starts the ride.

3. Sky Mountain Park

We love sending avid bikers to Sky Mountain Park because it was purposely created and designed by mountain bikers for fellow mountain bikers. After its debut in 2011, it became one of the most acclaimed trails in the area. See stunning views as you ride all the way from Aspen to Snowmass and back. During our travels, make sure you take in the 360-degree views of the Roaring Fork Valley.

4. Snowmass Bike Park

If you’re a beginner mountain biker or need a place for the entire family to enjoy, the Snowmass Bike Park is perfect for you. Here, there are lift-service trails, so you don’t have to overexert yourself by pedaling uphill. Head up the Elk Camp Gondola, then show the kids the ropes at the skills park and mini pump track. Once you’re ready, it’s time to take on one of the trails here!

5. Sunnyside Trail

The Sunnyside Trail is a 10-mile route that connects Red Mountain to the Hunter Creek Valley. The trail is deemed intermediate to moderate, so it can be a bit of a challenge at times. Once you’re at the top of Red Mountain, you’ll see awe-inspiring views of the valley below and distant Elk Mountain Range peaks.

Aspen Hiking: Aspen to Crested Butte

Aspen to Crested Butte Hike

If you’re looking for a true Aspen hiking experience, complete with mountain passes, wildflowers, and some serious elevation gain, consider the nearly 11-mile thru-hike from Aspen to Crested Butte. Thanks to the incredible views, contrasting red rock and Colorado blue skies, and beautiful flora along the hike, it’s a summertime Aspen Signature Properties staff favorite.

The Trail from Maroon Lake

Beginning in front of the towering Maroon Bells at Maroon Lake (elevation 9,580’) just outside of Aspen, the trail climbs and winds for nearly 6.5 miles to the top of West Maroon Pass (elevation 12,465’). You’ll hike through thick aspen trees, across rock fields and past scenic Crater Lake before reaching the apex of your hike. If you’re looking for a classic Colorado photo op, overlooking both the Aspen and Crested Butte trail sides at the top of West Maroon Pass is your place.

After a short break at the top, head down into the meadow toward Crested Butte and be prepared for what may be the most incredible display of wildflowers in all of Colorado. From here, it’s nearly all downhill as the trail meanders for about 4 miles toward the East Fork of West Maroon Trailhead at 10,448’.

What to Know

This is not an easy Aspen hiking trail, but it is rewarding. At about 10.45 miles from trailhead to trailhead, it’s a solid hike with steep switchbacks and a lot of exposure, even below tree line. It averages about 8 hours to complete, depending on the fitness of your group.

Summer weather in the mountains around Aspen often features afternoon thunderstorms, and it can quickly change from warm and sunny to downright cold and snowy at our high elevations. We highly recommend hitting the trailhead early in the day. If you’re bringing your furry friend, dogs must be kept on a leash. Don’t forget to practice “Leave no trace” guidelines, pack out what you pack in and read up on the full trail description or reach out to us before heading out on your adventure.

Trail from Aspen to Crested Butte

What to Bring

This hike is going to be a good workout. Bring snacks, plenty of water, sunscreen, layers, a rain jacket, first aid kit and a topographic map, which you can pick up at the Ute Mountaineer. Don’t forget your dog bags and extra water for dogs.

Aspen to Crested Butte Trail Shuttle

Unless you’re planning on camping for a night during your stay in Aspen, we suggest one of the shuttle services that will pick you up at the East Fork of West Maroon Trailhead and bring you back the 3 hours by road to Aspen, such as Dolly’s Mountain Shuttle.

Have more questions about this hike or others? Just ask us! We’d be happy to give you more details and help in your planning.
