In this blog, learn all you need to know about hiking Maroon Bells and Crested Butte and discovering the splendor of Colorado’s outdoors. So, are you ready to plan one of the greatest trips? Let’s get started!

Learn more about the best things to do in Aspen in our free Travel Guide. This exclusive planning tool features our top recommendations for local restaurants, events, shops, museums, outdoor activities, and more.

3 Things You Need to Know Before Hiking Maroon Bells and Crested Butte

What’s the Best Time to Visit?

The first thing you should consider before planning a hiking trip to Maroon Bells and Crested Butte is the weather. Indeed, you don’t want to visit when the trails are covered in snow or when the wind is blowing hard! Although Aspen is a stunning destination year-round, summer and fall are the best times to come for hiking. You’ll get sunny skies and gorgeous, blooming nature! Temperatures range between 41 and 80 degrees from May through September.

How Do You Get There?

If you live around Colorado, we highly recommend you go on a fun road trip to Aspen! There’s nothing like hopping in your car and driving on the scenic Colorado roads through the mountains. Plus, you get to pack all you want since you have more room! If driving to Maroon Bells and Crested Butte isn’t an option for you (aka too long), you can also fly to Aspen! Denver International Airport is the easiest option as it has regular flights from all over the country (and the world). From there, you can find ground transportation that will take you right to Aspen! We highly recommend renting a vehicle so you can move around more easily during your stay.

What Should You Bring?

Now that we’ve figured out when and how to get to Aspen, it’s time to think of what you will need to hike Maroon Bells and Crested Butte. Here is a list to help you get started:

  • Hiking Boots
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A light backpack
  • Snacks

  • Allergy medicine and anti-ivy cream
  • A camera
  • Sunglasses
  • A hat or cap
  • A hiking stick (if needed)

Once you reach the top, you’ll have access to restaurants, lawn games, kids’ activities, and more! They even have live kids shows during the summer season.

2. Go for a Bike Ride or Hike

Depending on the age of your children, a hike or bike ride is one of the best ways to experience the beauty of Aspen. During the spring, summer, and fall, the stunning mountains of Aspen make way for amazing trails of all skill levels. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our concierge team so we can rent bikes for you or give you our tips on the best hiking spots for your family!

3. Ski in the Winter, of Course!

At Snowmass and Buttermilk, there are designated areas that have been designed just for kids! They can ski or snowboard down the mountain with no problem here, and they don’t have to worry about tough terrain or running into experienced skiers that zip quickly down the mountain. If the kiddos haven’t quite learned to ski yet, there are Ski & Snowboard School Programs offered at the Treehouse Kids Adventure Center!

4. The Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Center

Like we mentioned above, the Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Center is a great resource if your children are under four years of age. This 2,300-square-meter childcare facility located in Snowmass Village has been designed to keep your kids busy! They’ll love all the Colorado-themed playrooms and supervised activities here.

5. Head to the Aspen Recreation Center

The Head to the Aspen Recreation Center hosts year-round, family-friendly activities we know you’ll love. Strap on some skates and teach the kids to ice skate, or give the kids swimming or kayaking lessons in the summer!
