Want to Know How to Experience Aspen/Snowmass Like a Local?

Want to Know How to Experience Aspen/Snowmass Like a Local?

Are you searching for insider info on how to experience Aspen/Snowmass like a local? Look no further than our guide to shopping, eating, and playing in Aspen!

1. Support Local Businesses

Shop like an Aspen local and support our local Aspen businesses. These stores are locally owned and operated and just fabulous for a day of shopping.

The Little Bird | Luxury Consignment | 525 E Cooper Ave, Aspen, CO 8161

Are you looking to score a high-end vintage bag or the perfect complement to your Après Ski wear? This luxury consignment shop has everything from Chanel to Manolo Blahnik to Hermes. Bonus: Shopping second-hand is sustainable and vintage pieces are très chic!

Pitkin County Dry Goods | Clothing Store | 520 E Cooper Ave, Aspen, CO 81611

Don’t let the name fool you; this Aspen institution has supplied upscale, high-quality items since 1969. Family-owned and operated, this store offers the likes of Zimmerman, Canada Goose, AGOLDE, and more.

Kemo Sabe | Western Wear | 217 S Galena St, Aspen, CO 81611

Get your “western” on at Kemo Sabe. This western outfitter is THE go-to place to pick up hats, boots, bags, buckles, and more! You can even design your own custom hat! We can’t think of a better souvenir.

Chequers | Home Décor and Furnishings | 602 E Hyman Ave, Aspen, CO 81611

If you’re looking to style your Aspen vacation home, or you simply want to bring a piece of Aspen home with you, you’ll want to check out Chequers.

2. Sample Local Flavors

Get a taste of what Aspen has to offer, literally! While many world-famous chefs take up residence in Aspen, not all of them cook with locally sourced ingredients. Some of our favorite local restaurants include:

Ajax Tavern | French-American | $$

Après ski is what we do best in this town, and Ajax Tavern is the place to see and be seen! In the summer, the outside deck’s large umbrellas make for fantastic al fresco dining.

Pine Creek Cookhouse | Alpine Gourmet | $$

The Pine Creek Cookhouse is a mandatory stop during your Aspen vacation. The remote restaurant, located at the end of the Castle Creek Valley in the Elk Mountain Range, serves high-end American cuisine, and the views are to die for.

Bosq | Worldly New American | $$$

Bosq serves “New American” cuisine at their location in downtown Aspen. The menu changes seasonally and will never disappoint.

Element 47 | Refined New American | $$$

Element 47, located in the Little Nell, serves “Colorado contemporary cuisine.”

Cache Cache | Upscale French-American | $$$$

One of our favorite restaurants in Aspen, Cache Cache, is a downtown French-American bistro. Wine connoisseurs rejoice over the 5000 bottles of wine kept in stock.

3. Hit the Slopes

What’s a visit to Aspen/Snowmass without snowboarding or skiing?

The best way to ski or board like a local is to learn the proper technique. You can save on lift tickets, lessons, and rentals when you purchase at least seven days in advance online from the Aspen Ski Company. It’s one less thing you’ll have to do when you arrive.

Plus, if you let them know you’re renting an Aspen Signature Property, we can have your lift tickets waiting for you at the residence when you arrive, which means no waiting in line! Visit the site and make sure you are on the Winter Season by clicking the “Winter” tab and look for “Lift Tickets.” When prompted to select a delivery method at checkout, simply select “Deliver to Lodge,” then select “Aspen Signature Properties,” and we’ll ensure your tickets are waiting for you at the residence upon your arrival.

How to Plan the Ultimate Road Trip from Denver to Aspen, CO

From cross-country adventures to weekend getaways, road trips are an American tradition. Packing your bags up and hitting the road is a rite of passage that makes for some unforgettable memories. Crank up the tunes, roll the windows down, and embark on the ultimate road trip from Denver to Aspen.

The open road is waiting.

Planning Your Denver to Aspen Road Trip: 10 of the Best Stops There and Back

A straight shot from Denver to Aspen would take you roughly three and a half hours via I-70 W. Whether you plan on renting a car after flying into Denver or you’re driving your own vehicle through the Mile High City on your way to Aspen, why not make an adventure out of your drive? We’ve mapped out some of the best stops to consider taking along the way.

MAP IT.

On the Way to Aspen

Denver Union Station

1. Denver Union Station

Did you know that Denver Union Station is a “green” building? Union Station’s Bus Concourse received Gold LEED certification thanks to recycled materials, increased ventilation, natural light, and a green cleaning policy. Before leaving Denver, be sure to stop and have your photo taken outside this iconic attraction.

2. Idaho Springs

Idaho Springs is a historic mountain town right outside of Denver that is worth a stop. If you have the time, visit the Argo Mill and Tunnel, a four-mile underground highway, to learn more about the region’s rich mining history. If you’re hungry, be sure to grab a slice of pizza at Beau Jo’s!

3. Georgetown

The next stop on your way to Aspen is Georgetown, CO, situated up high in the Rocky Mountains. If you’d like to take in the region’s natural beauty, climb aboard the Georgetown Loop Railroad! The engineer will take you over the Devil’s Gate Bridge and through the mountains.

4. Dillon Reservoir

This large and beautiful lake sits with stunning alpine scenery as a backdrop. Whether you’d like to get out on the lake, go fishing, or simply take in the views, you don’t want to miss this stop along your road trip to Aspen.

5. Glenwood Canyon

Glenwood Canyon in Glenwood Springs is up next on your road trip itinerary. The Colorado River carved this 16-mile canyon over the course of three million years. If you’d like to rest your muscles consider stopping by the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool.

6. Maroon Bells

Before heading to your home base in Aspen, make one last stop. Pictures will never do Maroon Bells any justice. You simply have to see this marvel for yourself. The 14,000-foot peaks are located just 10 miles west of Aspen or 16 miles east of Snowmass up Maroon Creek Road off Highway 82 in a glacial valley and truly epitomize the beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Independence Pass

8. Independence Pass

Driving through the Independence Pass will offer some of the most beautiful scenery throughout the course of your trek. This 32-mile stretch will take you roughly 45 minutes to an hour and a half to traverse. The road is narrow, but it’s completely safe if you drive carefully.

9. Twin Lakes

Venture on to the base of Mount Elbert, where you will find two glittering lakes reflecting some of the nation’s tallest peaks. Stretch your legs and hike around Twin Lakes, where you will encounter unspoiled nature, curious wildlife, and breathtaking scenery.

10. Leadville

Make one last stop before you return to Denver. Leadville, CO, is a charming and historic mining town. We recommend grabbing a bite to eat at the El Mexicano restaurant on Main Street for authentic Mexican food.

Here Are the Best Spots to Watch the Sunset in Aspen

Red Butte Trail

If you want to enjoy a little bit of a challenge during your sunset adventure in Aspen, head to the Red Butte. This small mountain sits overlooking the Aspen Golf Club and boasts incredible clear sunset views from its 400+ foot peak. The trailhead can be a little tricky to find, located between two houses on Cemetery Lane, and parking is down the street at Henry Stein Park.

Tip: While the hike up to Red Butte is only a half-mile, the grade is steep, and there are few challenging scrambles. It’s suitable for families with older kids or just adults, but those with younger children will want to tackle the other trails on our list.

Snowmass Village Nature Trail

Discover a beautiful mix of nature and wildlife while hiking the Snowmass Village Nature Trail in the evening. This short mile-long path through tall Aspen pines is features tons of columbine flowers, the state flower of Colorado, that you can spot along the trail. There are several spots where the trees open, and you can watch the light dance in the sky as the sun sets.

Ajax Trail

Enjoy sweeping views of Aspen as you take in the sunset from the Ajax Trail. This one-and-a-half-mile trail begins at Koch Park and skirts along Aspen Mountain, providing you with a bird’s eye view of the town. It’s the perfect spot to watch the soft glow of the sky reflect off the mountains and buildings as the sun sets behind you.

Aspen Mountain Nature Trail

Panoramic views are the name of the game on the Aspen Mountain Nature Trail. This one-mile loop trail at the top of Aspen Mountain boasts one of the best sunset views in the area. You can also enjoy plenty of wildlife and sightseeing while you’re there, including spotting the iconic Maroon Bells to the southwest.

Ruedi Reservoir

The Ruedi Reservoir is hands-down one of the best spots to watch the sunset near Aspen. The lake is about an hour’s drive from town, but it’s well worth the time. The scenic beauty of the reservoir and surrounding mountains is second to none in the area, and you can watch the sun drop below the mountains from the lakeshore or from Gyp Hill (the best vantage point on the northwest side of the water).

4. John Denver Sanctuary

If you love John Denver and nature, then you’ll want to check out this serene garden. It’s full of streams, memorials, lush grass, and perennial flowers and is the perfect spot to take some gorgeous photos. Plus, it’s within walking distance from some of our properties.

5. Dancing Fountain in Downtown Aspen

The Dancing Fountain in the heart of downtown Aspen provides some great photo ops during the summer. Head to the corner of Hyman Avenue and Mill Street to snap a couple of pictures facing the north with Red Mountain in the background.

6. Smuggler Mountain Observation Deck

The panoramic views of ski slopes and downtown make Smuggler Mountain Observation Deck one of the best Instagramable spots in Aspen. Soak up the scenery and take in the fresh mountain air while you’re up there.

7. Top of the Ute Trail

Cap off your hike along the Ute Trail with a couple of breathtaking shots of mountain vistas. The trailhead sits just south of downtown Aspen and runs 6.2 miles along Bell Mountain, providing plenty of photo ops.

8. The Gazebo at Paepcke Park

Situated in the heart of downtown Aspen, the Paepcke Park gazebo offers a romantic and charming focal point for your photo op. Whether it’s covered in snow during winter or blending in with the lush greenery during summer, you can always walk over to this beautiful little park while you’re checking out downtown.

9. Grateful Deli

Music, food, and tie-dye – that’s the funky theme running through this Grateful Dead-themed sandwich shop. The Grateful Deli’s mix of delicious sandwiches and walls decorated with stickers and tie-dye is definitely Insta-worthy.
