Snowmass Hot Air Balloon Festival: A Sky-High Celebration

Every year, the picturesque town of Snowmass Village in Colorado transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors and whimsical shapes as it hosts the Snowmass Hot Air Balloon Festival. This year, from September 13th to 15th, from 7:30am-9:30am the festival promises to be an unforgettable spectacle, showcasing a stunning array of balloons against the backdrop of the majestic Rocky Mountains.

We are lucky enough to offer some Snowmass Village Rentals nearby the action. Call us today at (970) 544-8001 to connect with our brokers and claim your getaway.

A Soaring Tradition

The Snowmass Hot Air Balloon Festival is more than just a visual feast; it’s a cherished tradition that draws thousands of visitors each year. With its origins rooted in community spirit and a love for ballooning, the festival has evolved into one of the most anticipated events in the region. This year’s festival marks another chapter in its storied history, continuing to offer a unique blend of family-friendly activities, breathtaking balloon displays, and local charm.

What to Expect:

1. Balloon Launches and Glow Events: The heart of the festival lies in the balloon launches. Each morning, as dawn breaks, a colorful array of hot air balloons ascends into the clear blue sky, creating a stunning mosaic of colors and patterns. The festival also features “glow” events in the evening, where the balloons light up the night in a mesmerizing display of illuminated fabrics.

2. Family-Friendly Activities: Beyond the ballooning itself, the festival offers a plethora of activities for all ages. There are interactive ballooning demonstrations, face painting, live music, and craft vendors. Kids can enjoy bounce houses, balloon art, and a variety of games designed to keep them entertained while parents relax and soak in the atmosphere.

3. Community and Culture: The festival isn’t just about balloons; it’s also a celebration of Snowmass Village’s community spirit and culture. Local artisans and performers showcase their talents, adding a unique local flavor to the event. Visitors can explore the area, enjoy the mountain air, and immerse themselves in the friendly, welcoming atmosphere that makes Snowmass so special.

Tips for Attendees:

  • Early Arrival: Balloon launches are best enjoyed in the early morning when the skies are clear and the balloons are ready to take off. Arriving early ensures you get a good spot and can fully appreciate the spectacle.
  • Dress in Layers: The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable as temperatures fluctuate throughout the day.
  • Bring a Camera: With so many vibrant balloons and scenic views, you’ll want to capture every moment. Don’t forget to bring a camera or smartphone to document your experience.
  • Stay Hydrated: High-altitude events can be dehydrating, so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

What Are the Top Aspen Museums?

Vacations are a great time to do the things that you rarely get to squeeze into your busy schedule. Think about it: when was the last time you went to a museum? Maybe it’s been way too long! Let’s change that. During your next trip to Colorado, visit some of the top Aspen museums. Whether you want to add some color to your life at the Aspen Art Museum, explore the past at the Historical Society, or admire fascinating exhibits at the Aspen Institute, you’re in for a treat. Read on and get ready to be inspired!

You can learn more about all the wonderful things to do in Aspen in our free Travel Guide. This unique vacation planning tool features our recommendations for local restaurants, events, shops, outdoor adventures, spas, and many more museums.

3 Aspen Museums You Need to Add to Your Itinerary

The Aspen Art Museum

There are many reasons to visit Aspen — one of them being its museums. There’s nothing better than stepping into a building and coming out of it more knowledgeable than before. If that’s the kind of experience you’re looking for, then the Aspen Art Museum is for you. Dive into the world of contemporary art at this institution and immerse your senses in incredible works. The museum rotates their exhibitions often, so there are new things to discover during each visit! The best part? Admission is always free.

The Aspen Institute

The Aspen Institute is not a museum per say, but when it comes to amazing cultural experiences, it’s at the top of our list. This non-profit strives to create conversations and bring people together through a variety of topics. The Institute often hosts events ranging from literature to communication, the economy, and the environment. Check out their upcoming events to see what’s happening during your stay and grab your tickets in advance.

Aspen Historical Society

Another Aspen museum we love is the Aspen Historical Society. Take a step back in time as you explore decades (and centuries) of history that have shaped Aspen into the beautiful town we know and love today. Visit the Wheeler/Stallard Museum, located in a gorgeous Victorian home, from Tuesday to Saturday. It’s open to seniors from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and welcomes the general public from 12 to 5 p.m.

Here’s What to Do in Aspen in May

Winter is a great time to visit in Aspen if you love skiing and snowboarding. But did you know that what comes next can be just as exciting? Aspen in the spring is a sight to behold, and it’s a great place to welcome those warmer days! Below, we’ll tell you all about this lovely season – and specifically what to do in Aspen in May.

You can learn more about our favorite seasonal activities in our free Aspen Travel Guide. This helpful trip planning tool comes in handy when you’re looking for the best restaurants, events, shops, museums, and outdoor activities in the area.

3 Activities to Enjoy in Aspen in May

Go on a Scenic Drive Through Maroon Bells

If there’s one thing Aspen doesn’t lack, it’s jaw-dropping scenery! Admire all the beauty that the month of May brings with a scenic drive through Maroon Bells. Here, you’ll have 360-degree-views of the mountains and the lush nature surrounding them.

Another reason why spring is the ideal time to go on a road trip is because there are no toll fees. The road to the bells officially opens at the beginning of May, but starting in June, a fee of $10 per vehicle is required from 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Maroon Bells is also a great spot for hiking, so don’t forget to pack your hiking shoes!

Relax at a Hot Spring

May in Aspen is a time when things slow down. After the busy winter season, you’ll want some time to focus on yourself! There’s no better way to do that than by visiting a hot spring. Aspen is home to many springs that will help you relax and enjoy the region’s beautiful views at the same time.

Grab Lunch Downtown

How about treating yourself to a delicious meal during your stay? Aspen is home to several world-class restaurants that are sure to satisfy your cravings. Take advantage of seasonal specials and taste local products at reduced prices. Plus, parking downtown is free on weekends, so there’s no need to drive around trying to find a spot before walking to your favorite restaurant.

Visit the Aspen Art Museum

We know that the weather in Aspen can be unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan in case it rains. The Aspen Art Museum is one of our favorite places to explore. Not only is the museum free to the public, but it also features an extensive collection of ongoing exhibitions and events to please the entire family. Feel free to grab a bite at the museum’s café before returning to your Aspen Signature Vacation Rental.

5 Activities to Enjoy in Aspen in the Spring

Skiing

Spring is still a prime time to enjoy the thrill of winter sports. If you want to hit the slopes and spend a day skiing Colorado’s mountains, you can! Head over to Snowmass Ski Resort and treat yourself to an unforgettable adventure. Just remember to bring sunscreen and Chapstick!

Cross-Country Skiing

If alpine skiing isn’t your cup of tea, try cross-country instead. This is a great option for travelers who still want to enjoy the outdoors and make the most of the snow. Not only is cross-country skiing an excellent workout, but it also offers the chance to explore trails that are off-the-beaten-path in Aspen’s lush forest. The Aspen Nordic Trail System is the perfect place for beginners to start!

Horseback Riding

When weather permits, horseback riding can be a fun and unique activity for you and your loved ones to try. Imagine strolling Aspen’s landscape on saddleback, channeling your inner cowboy or cowgirl in the mountains! Maroon Bells Guide and Outfitters offers scenic rides for the entire family. They are also conveniently located just outside of downtown Aspen. If you’re feeling romantic, book a lunch or dinner ride for two with a picnic included.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

Spring in Aspen also welcomes the return of warmer temperatures and lush flora and fauna. If you want to hit the trails after a long winter, now is the time! Our area boasts many wonderful hiking and mountain biking trails that you and your group will love. Whether you are a novice or experienced hiker/biker, you’re in for a memorable adventure.

Shopping

Another spring activity to consider is shopping. There’s nothing like taking a leisurely stroll downtown and indulging in some retail therapy! Treat yourself to a new outfit, skiing accessories, or gear for your outdoor adventures. Before you return to your vacation rental, make sure you book a table at one of downtown Aspen’s many restaurants and try our delicious, locally sourced food.
