How to Plan the Ultimate Road Trip from Denver to Aspen, CO

From cross-country adventures to weekend getaways, road trips are an American tradition. Packing your bags up and hitting the road is a rite of passage that makes for some unforgettable memories. Crank up the tunes, roll the windows down, and embark on the ultimate road trip from Denver to Aspen.

The open road is waiting.

Planning Your Denver to Aspen Road Trip: 10 of the Best Stops There and Back

A straight shot from Denver to Aspen would take you roughly three and a half hours via I-70 W. Whether you plan on renting a car after flying into Denver or you’re driving your own vehicle through the Mile High City on your way to Aspen, why not make an adventure out of your drive? We’ve mapped out some of the best stops to consider taking along the way.

MAP IT.

On the Way to Aspen

Denver Union Station

1. Denver Union Station

Did you know that Denver Union Station is a “green” building? Union Station’s Bus Concourse received Gold LEED certification thanks to recycled materials, increased ventilation, natural light, and a green cleaning policy. Before leaving Denver, be sure to stop and have your photo taken outside this iconic attraction.

2. Idaho Springs

Idaho Springs is a historic mountain town right outside of Denver that is worth a stop. If you have the time, visit the Argo Mill and Tunnel, a four-mile underground highway, to learn more about the region’s rich mining history. If you’re hungry, be sure to grab a slice of pizza at Beau Jo’s!

3. Georgetown

The next stop on your way to Aspen is Georgetown, CO, situated up high in the Rocky Mountains. If you’d like to take in the region’s natural beauty, climb aboard the Georgetown Loop Railroad! The engineer will take you over the Devil’s Gate Bridge and through the mountains.

4. Dillon Reservoir

This large and beautiful lake sits with stunning alpine scenery as a backdrop. Whether you’d like to get out on the lake, go fishing, or simply take in the views, you don’t want to miss this stop along your road trip to Aspen.

5. Glenwood Canyon

Glenwood Canyon in Glenwood Springs is up next on your road trip itinerary. The Colorado River carved this 16-mile canyon over the course of three million years. If you’d like to rest your muscles consider stopping by the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool.

6. Maroon Bells

Before heading to your home base in Aspen, make one last stop. Pictures will never do Maroon Bells any justice. You simply have to see this marvel for yourself. The 14,000-foot peaks are located just 10 miles west of Aspen or 16 miles east of Snowmass up Maroon Creek Road off Highway 82 in a glacial valley and truly epitomize the beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Independence Pass

8. Independence Pass

Driving through the Independence Pass will offer some of the most beautiful scenery throughout the course of your trek. This 32-mile stretch will take you roughly 45 minutes to an hour and a half to traverse. The road is narrow, but it’s completely safe if you drive carefully.

9. Twin Lakes

Venture on to the base of Mount Elbert, where you will find two glittering lakes reflecting some of the nation’s tallest peaks. Stretch your legs and hike around Twin Lakes, where you will encounter unspoiled nature, curious wildlife, and breathtaking scenery.

10. Leadville

Make one last stop before you return to Denver. Leadville, CO, is a charming and historic mining town. We recommend grabbing a bite to eat at the El Mexicano restaurant on Main Street for authentic Mexican food.

Whether you’re on a road trip or just want to get out of town for part of the day, take a drive over Independence Pass. The mountain pass, which is along the Continental Divide, sits at 12,095 feet. There’s a scenic overlook and lots of nearby hiking trails.

The Maroon Bells are some of the most photographed mountains in the country, making them a must-see during your Aspen vacation. The “Bells” sit right behind Maroon Lake offering breathtaking views. Off-Roading

Pack a lunch and have a picnic on top of Aspen Mountain (known as “Ajax” to locals). Start by driving up Midnight Mine Road (on the backside of the mountain) and end up at the Sundeck (where the gondola ends).

Relax and take in the views at the top, then drive down the frontside of Ajax — right into downtown.

Aspen Farmers Market

The Aspen Saturday Market takes place weekly from June 16 through October 6. They permit only items grown or produced in Colorado to sell during the downtown event. We recommend the Palisades peaches and Aspen Crunch granola!

Golfing

Golf-in-Aspen-Golf-Course

There is plenty of great golfing in the Roaring Fork Valley. The Aspen Golf Club is a public, 18-hole golf course with a PGA award-winning pro shop, tennis courts, and restaurant.

The Aspen Golf Course sits just outside of downtown Aspen (near the airport), which makes it a convenient option. And, it is only a 10-minute drive from Snowmass Village.

Fly Fishing

There are plenty of great fly fishing guides between Aspen and Glenwood Springs, depending on where you would like to go and if you prefer a float trip or wade trip. The main fishing spots are on the Roaring Fork River or the Frying Pan River in Basalt. This is the perfect activity for some bonding time with family or friends.

Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking in Forest

Mountain biking is the “next big thing” in the Western States, especially here in Aspen/Snowmass! If you enjoy cross-country mountain biking, head to Snowmass and try some of our favorite trails. If you prefer to bike downhill only, take the Elk Camp Gondola up and spend the day at the Snowmass Bike Park. There are several lunch options at the Snowmass Bike Park as well as the Breathtaker Alpine Coaster.

Hot Air Balloon

Watch the sunrise over our majestic mountains here in Aspen/Snowmass with your loved one or your family on a hot air balloon adventure. Schedule a pick up from your vacation rental before sunrise and head to Snowmass Town Park to the hot air balloon. Enjoy champagne and some brunch once you’ve landed back on the ground!

Pine Creek Cookhouse

Enjoy a biking or driving excursion through the beautiful Castle Creek Valley. On the way, stop at the Ashcroft Ghost Town to learn about the history of Aspen. The Pine Creek Cookhouse is located at the end of the road and has a relaxing patio with gorgeous views of the Elk Mountain Range!

Aspen Music Festival and School

Founded in 1949, the Aspen Music Festival and School is one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in the country. Talented young men and women train together with some of the top instructors and put on jaw-dropping shows for a total of eight weeks. The summer season features themed performances around town. You can buy tickets to individual performances or passes to the entire season.

Gondola Rides

There’s nothing quite like a gondola ride during the summer in Aspen. Take the Elk Camp Gondola (in Snowmass) or the Silver Queen Gondola (on Aspen Mountain) and check out the fun activities to enjoy with your family.

From hiking and mountain biking to yoga and lawn games, there is something for everyone. You’ll find dining at the top of each gondola as well — the Elk Camp Restaurant is in Snowmass, and the Sundeck Restaurant is on Aspen Mountain. Both are grab-and-go and have a large variety of options, from paninis to pizza.

Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater rafting is a popular summer activity in Aspen, and there are many trips (and levels) to choose from. Take on the big rapids or having a quiet and relaxing float — the choice is yours!

Snowmass Rodeo

The Snowmass Rodeo starts in mid-June and takes place every Wednesday night through August 22 at the Snowmass Town Park. The rodeo grounds (and BBQ by Conundrum Catering Co.) open at 5 p.m., and the rodeo begins at 7 p.m. sharp.

Free Outdoor Concerts

There are free outdoor concerts on Fanny Hill in Snowmass almost every week of the summer! Grab some blankets, wear comfortable clothing, and bring layers — it can be chilly once the sunsets. You’ll be all set to relax (or dance) while a variety of talented musicians jam out on stage.

Here’s What to Do in Aspen in May

Winter is a great time to visit in Aspen if you love skiing and snowboarding. But did you know that what comes next can be just as exciting? Spring is a sight to behold, and it’s a great place to welcome those warmer days! Below, we’ll tell you all about this lovely season – and specifically what the highlights are in May.

You can learn more about our favorite seasonal activities in our free Aspen Travel Guide. This helpful trip planning tool comes in handy when you’re looking for the best restaurants, events, shops, museums, and outdoor activities in the area.

3 Activities to Enjoy in Springtime in Aspen

Go on a Scenic Drive Through Maroon Bells

If there’s one thing Aspen doesn’t lack, it’s jaw-dropping scenery! Admire all the beauty that the month of May brings with a scenic drive through Maroon Bells. Here, you’ll have 360-degree-views of the mountains and the lush nature surrounding them.

Another reason why spring is the ideal time to go on a road trip is because there are no toll fees. The road to the bells officially opens at the beginning of May, but starting in June, a fee of $10 per vehicle is required from 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Maroon Bells is also a great spot for hiking, so don’t forget to pack your hiking shoes!

Relax at a Hot Spring

May in Aspen is a time when things slow down. After the busy winter season, you’ll want some time to focus on yourself! There’s no better way to do that than by visiting a hot spring. Aspen is home to many springs that will help you relax and enjoy the region’s beautiful views at the same time.

Grab Lunch Downtown

How about treating yourself to a delicious meal during your stay? Aspen is home to several world-class restaurants that are sure to satisfy your cravings. Take advantage of seasonal specials and taste local products at reduced prices. Plus, parking downtown is free on weekends, so there’s no need to drive around trying to find a spot before walking to your favorite restaurant.

Visit the Aspen Art Museum

We know that the weather in Aspen can be unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan in case it rains. The Aspen Art Museum is one of our favorite places to explore. Not only is the museum free to the public, but it also features an extensive collection of ongoing exhibitions and events to please the entire family. Feel free to grab a bite at the museum’s café before returning to your Aspen Signature Vacation Rental.
